Next steps for the Uganda Record

The July 11, 2010 bomb blasts in Kampala proved to be the high point of the Uganda Record.

Not only did the newspaper take a contrary stand with the regard to who might have masterminded the attacks, but it ultimately faced the laws of the state of Uganda.

Many readers might have read, watched or heard about the confessions by a number of young men in Kampala, watched by the Chief of Military Intelligence, Brig. James Mugira.

It was these "confessions' that raised the suspicion of even the many Ugandans who had at first dismissed as conspiracy theory the Uganda Record's version of the bombings.

New Vision --- Uganda's only independent newspaper?

Two weeks ago, Aug. 15, the Uganda Police issued an order to the media to stop reporting on the matter of the suspects arrested in connection with the July 11, 2010 bomb blasts in the Ugandan capital Kampala, in which 76 people died.

The New Vision, the government newspaper was bold enough to stand up and defiantly insist that it would challenge the police's order not to discuss the fate of the self-confessed July 11 suspects.

This is a surprising development in Ugandan journalism. This is not the New Vision most people expected to be reading.
