Few days after reporting back to school, fire has destroyed most of the learners’ belongings
Property worth millions of shillings was on Tuesday destroyed in an inferno at Bweranyangi Junior School in Bushenyi district.
According to Isaac Katondore the school head teacher says the fire started around 11:40 am in the boy’s dormitory which accommodates about 60 students of P4, P5, and P7.
The head teacher said there were no fatalities, though most of the students’ belongings staying in the dormitory were destroyed.
By the time the dormitory caught fire, students had retreated back to class from break time.
The cause of the fire is being investigated, but primary findings show that it could have been caused by an electric short circuit.
Monica Kobugabe, one of the school Matrons, who was inside the dormitory said she heard a big bang from one corner of the dormitory that sparked the fire.
Rev Bernard Mushabe, the diocesan education secretary thanked the police fire brigade team that responded in time as well as teachers and other school staff who worked tirelessly to put out the blaze, preventing its spread
He said the school management, is set to hold a meeting over the next course of action but insisted that they won’t send the affected students back home as they have been at school for only two days having reported yesterday for 3rd term.
Robert Atuhairwe the Bushenyi RDC who visited the scene after the incident commended the school leadership for their quick response to the disaster.
