MUK endorses 100% salary increment for staff

Makerere university has bowed to pressure and revised its 2013/14 budget to include the 100% salary increment for all its staff.

Yesterday, March 03, at the General staff meeting, the General Assembly had resolved “to lay down tools effective midnight tonight 3rd May 2013 until the demand to include 100% salary increment in the financial year starting July 2013/2014 Makerere university budget as starting point is fulfilled.”

In a rapid response, the university has revised the budget to include the 100% salary increment.

“ I do share the concerns of staff to increase the salaries by 100%. A Professor (highly qualified) gets only Shs 3m per month. Their demand is justifiable; we need a better remuneration for all Makerere University staff.

However, the university management and the university council do not support the strike because it will affect the smooth running of the university including the examinations, which are scheduled to start on Monday 6th May 2013,” said the Vice Chancellor, Prof John Ddumba Ssentamu.

A statement from the university indicates that an addendum indicating the inclusion of the increment shall be sent to the Ministry of Education and Sports on Monday next week. The initial budget [without the salary increment demand] had been sent on March 31, 2013.
