Chess Players Ready for National Championships

The first phase of the Olympiad Qualifiers which will also be the National Chess Championship commence this weekend (Saturday 18th) at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel in Rubaga.

This championships only feature players without international ratings and are the first phase of the Olympiad Qualifiers. The championships end on Sunday 19th at the same venue.

Uganda Chess Federation released a statement that reads, “The Federation has been merged the Qualifiers with the National Chess Championship and this will go through three phases.”

The first phase will see the top 20 unrated players picked to join rated players in the second phase.The top 12 will then be picked from the second phase will proceed to the final round slated for 1st to 4th May 2014. The national team will be picked from the top 12 and will go ahead to represent Uganda at the World Olympiad in Norway.

Richard Tugume who recently won the Rwabushenyi Memorial Championships is expected to feature with other national players like Malcolm Etolu and Simon Gonza. The winner of the final phase will also become the National Champion.
